A Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS) is a production strategy that uses computer-controlled machines and robotics to adapt quickly to changes in product type or production volume. This adaptability supports lean inventory practices by enabling smaller lot sizes and quicker response to demand changes. In inventory optimization, FMS plays a vital role in reducing finished goods inventory. Rather than producing large batches to achieve economies of scale, manufacturers can produce based on actual or near-term demand signals, reducing the need for overstocking. FMS also helps reduce lead times and supports just-in-time (JIT) strategies. The integration of FMS with demand planning and inventory control systems allows for synchronized production and replenishment cycles. This results in more agile, responsive supply chains. While FMS requires significant capital investment and skilled personnel, the long-term benefits include reduced inventory waste, faster order fulfillment, and better alignment between production and customer needs.
